Situated between Cambridge and Watertown, it’s conveniently accessible by public transportation and approximately 3 miles from Harvard Square. The wide sidewalks and ample outdoor seating invite visitors to explore the shops and then relax with delicious sandwiches, pastries, and expertly crafted lattes. Additionally, artist pop-ups at the gallery and wine tasting events at The Spirited Gourmet on most Fridays and Saturdays offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the local culture.

Abstractions

In the words of Monty “Now for something completely
different”. The Hawthorn Gallery will be featuring local
abstract painters and their work this fall. Many hate abstract work, or diminish it as not being real art. How often have I heard “my five year old could do that”. To fully appreciate abstract work I find I must sit quietly and devote time to really observing the work, not just look for the 15 to 30 second the average museum goer allots to viewing fine works of art.

Abstract Art challenges the viewer because it breaks
with almost every tradition of the past. It seeks to portray not a realistic scene but is concerned the expression of feeling and emotion. It reduces painting to essentials, line, color and form. This art does not seek to replicate nature but to try and capture the expression of feeling. That is why not every artist can master abstraction. Conversely that is why children are good at it because they are oblivious to hard and fast artistic conventions and paint with feeling. Picasso’s famous quote captures perfectly the artistic freedom artist try to achieve in abstraction, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child”.
